Is Menopause Bothering You?

Updated: Mar 31, 2021

A lot of the elderly women in our families and circles suffer from the common problem of menopause and have to go through several hormonal and body changes during this phase in their lives. Menopause is a period in a woman's life (typically between the ages of 45 and 50) when menstruation ceases. During this phase, a lot of women don’t really know the cause of the symptoms and changes in their body, they may not know how to take care of themselves during this phase or may not find the common spaces or have the opportunity to discuss these problems with anyone.

Zenana for Women is here to provide you with some of the pointers on how to take care of yourself or your loved ones with an issue like menopause.

Some of the common symptoms a woman goes through include hot flashes and vaginal dryness. There may also be sleep disturbances. The combination of these symptoms can cause anxiety or depression.

Menopause is a natural process with treatments that focus on symptomatic relief. Vaginal dryness is treated with topical lubricants or estrogen. Medications can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes. In special circumstances, oral hormone therapy may be used.

Staying healthy and attending to bothersome symptoms can help ease the menopause transition. It's also important to manage the increased risk for heart disease and osteoporosis that comes with menopause. Here are some tips you can follow to ease things down:

· Quit smoking of using tobacco products, if you currently do.

· Eat a healthy diet, low in fat, high in fiber, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain foods.

· Make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D.

· Learn what your healthy weight is, and try to stay there.

· Do weight-baring exercise, such as climbing stairs or dancing, at least 3 days each week for healthy bones. Try to be physically active in other ways for your general health, too.

Remember: menopause is not a disease that has to be treated. But it's a good idea to talk to your doctor about staying healthy and things you can do if symptoms like hot flashes bother you.
